The mill is located on the bank of the
Volga
river in the Balakhna district 30 km from Nizhniy Novgorod and 450 km from
Moscow
. The decision to build the paper mill near Balakhna was due to its proximity to
Moscow, to the exiting NIGRES power station, to forest and water resources and to good transport links.
The Balakhna district covers 95,800 hectares and its population of 88,000 live in one large town, five small towns and 40 villages.
The district centre is the town of
Balakhna
– an ancient Russian town founded in 1474. The town stretches for along the
Volga river. Its scattered layout is due to topographical and soil conditions next to the river as well as the expanding industry demanding a riverside location. Sixty three thousand people live in Balakhna. |
