Process (summary)

  • Paper production at JSC Volga starts at the wood yard. Part of the incoming spruce timber is cut by the slasher saws into 1.2 meter lengths, debarked without water and sent to the SGW mill. The rest is debarked and delivered to the wood chippers. The wood chips are used to produce TMP in a two stage process involving high-pressure refining of cooked chips with subsequent screening, thickening and bleaching.

  • The debarked 1.2 m timber is fed into the grinder magazines and is pressed lengthwise against rotating ceramic stones, reducing solid timber into its constituent fibres. The resulting mechanical wood pulp is then screened, cleaned, thickened and bleached.

  • The semi-products (TMP, mechanical and chemical pulp) are mixed in specific proportions to create the paper-stock, which is screened, cleaned and de-aerated before going to the paper machines. The wire part at the wet end of the paper machines forms the paper web. The web is dewatered under pressure exerted by press rolls and then runs through steam-heated drying cylinders, passes through calendar rolls to give the paper a smooth finish and is then wound onto the end-reel. Finally, the paper is cut by a slitting machine into reels with ordered dimensions. The reels are wrapped and labelled on a packing line and transported by conveyors to the warehouse for subsequent shipment by trucks, rail or ship to the end user.
